Griffin Theatre: Scratch

Griffin’s 2017 Studio Artist Phil Spencer has wrangled a handful of inspired comedy brains, new writers and alternative theatre makers. This month he’ll lock them in a room (and leave them to simmer) for a working week.

Join us on Sunday 28 May for the rough and ready Griffin Scratch, an evening of new (hopefully hilarious) ideas. There’ll be scripts in hands, snippets on stage, jokes-in-progress and all sorts of gloriously unfinished arty business for you to watch for the first (and possibly last) time.

Writers: Nikki Britton, Michael Workman, Caleb Lewis, Jennifer Wong, Henry Stone and Sabrina D’Angelo

Actors: Lucy Bell, Gareth Davies, Aileen Huynh, Alex Lee, Jamie Oxenbould and Carlo Richie

The Queen / The Madame

For two nights only, immersive event magicians The Boon Companions will be presenting the brilliant talents of writer/performer NICK COYLE (Me Pregnant!, Nick Coyle’s Guided Meditation, Blue Wizard) and body poet SABRINA D’ANGELO (Why Do I Dream?, Zen The Pigeon Girl) as they each perform their one-person theatrical spectaculars live on stage.

With heroines inspired by 19th century literature, THE QUEEN/THE MADAME is your opportunity to witness two incredible performers presenting shows back-to-back. Utterly unique and not to be missed. BYO bonnet.

(NZ Fringe 2014)

Body-poet Sabrina D’Angelo tells the story of her life (and the life of her story). Enter a bizarre silent film world where bears, bum-worms and Madame Bovary burst forth like hot-air buffoons. Described as ‘Kate Bush meets Mr. Bean’, Sabrina probes into the grand themes of life, love and identity with the grace and zest of an excited toddler. Wickedly funny and heartwarmingly tender, it’s the physical comedy that’s all in your mind.

“An amazing array of physical comedy on display. You will be rewarded with dozens of laughs and get many more as you revisit the stranger moments after you leave.” Crikey

“Will have you in stitches.” The Age

“Horrifically funny.” Time Out Melbourne

“D’Angelo has more commitment than a suicide bomber” Theatreview NZ

“Comedy equals tragedy plus mime.” All mimes

Created with Cal McCrystal (One Man, Two Guvnors) & Justin Heazlewood (The Bedroom Philosopher)

VENUE: The Factory Theatre
DATES: 5 and 7 May 2016
TIME: 9:15PM

Zen the Pigeon Girl – Sydney season

After a delightful season as part of the Darebin Arts Speakeasy program at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in April, I’m excited to be presenting Zen the Pigeon Girl in the July school holidays as part of the Rock Surfers Theatre Co.’s program.

Meet Zen. She’s half-pigeon, half-human. Zen has arms instead of wings. She can’t fly, but she can do other cool stuff like play the sitar, and do tricks with her marshmallow nunchucks.  Zen is on an important mission: to find her lost mum! She must journey up high, into the sea in the sky – kingdom of the cosmic octopus. But how will she get there without wings? Join Zen as she travels through lands of songful soup caves and farting sunflowers, meeting scaredy goats and bummy worms along the way. A seriously silly new action-adventure tale told through physical comedy, clowning, puppetry and music.

Written with Justin Heazlewood
With music by The Bedroom Philosopher
Produced by Rock Surfers Theatre Co.
7-11 July 2015

Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow!

In August I had the great privilege of being artist-in-residence at the Pact Centre for Emerging Artists, developing a new work about apocalyptic fiction and doomsday preparations.

Don't Stop - PSpace Social

It was mind-bendingly fun, full of weird experiments and exciting collaborations, and the outcome was pure glorious, hilarious madness. This was the first of a series of developments for this work, more info to come about future incarnations. In the meantime, here is an interview I did with PACT about it all, and some images from the work in progress.
